Air Force Marshal Arjan Singh
“His contribution to the Indian Air Force is monumental to the least. The IAF grew with him. He was the epitome of military leadership in the classical sense and it is, therefore, not surprising that he was honoured with the rank of Air Force Marshal,” former Vice Chief of IAF Kapil Kak said.
Air force Marshal Arjan Singh was an iconic personality of Indian Armed forces. He was a hero of Indo – Pak war 1965. The only officer who got the highest rank of Indian Airforce, MARSHAL. The rank is equivalent to the 5starfield marshal of Indian Army. Arjan Singh has flown various aircraft in all his career. He played a very important role in making the Indian Air Force strengthen. With his contribution, IAF ranks fourth in the world.
Y B Chavan, the then Defence Minister had written: “Air Marshal Arjan Singh is a jewel of a person, quiet efficient and firm; unexcitable but a very able leader.”
About Arjan Singh
- The war hero of 1965 was born on 15 April 1919 in Lyallpur in Punjab.
- He persuaded his education at Montgomery, British India and also join the RAF College in Cranwell.
- Again posted as Pilot officer in IAF in December 1938.
- He led an IAF squadron into combat in 1944 Arakan Campaign
- As a result of unexcelled skill of flying aircraft, he was awarded Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC).
- Due to his flying skill and bravery , Arhan Singh was selected for the Empire Pilot training course at Royal Air Force (RAF) Cranwell in 1938 when he was 19 years old. He retired from service in 1969.
- After he retired in August 1969, he Ambassadorship to Switzerland. He was Lieutenant Governor of Delhi from December 1989 to December 1990.
- He was also awarded Padma Vibhushan.
- On attaining age of 98 he died at the hospital in delhi.
- In Indian army the 5 satr rank is field Marshal similarly in IAF Air Cheif Marshal is the 5 starer highest rank of Indian Airforce.
Air Marshall Arjan Singh task and Assignments
- First of all, an assignment given to him was to fly Westland Wapiti biplanes in the North-Western Frontier Province as a member of the No.1 RIAF Squadron.
- After that, for a short period, he was added as the member of No. 2 RIAF Squadron where he fly Marsha against the tribal forces.
- He rejoins the No 1 Squadron as Flying officer to fly Hawker Hurricane.
- On 1944, furthermore he promoted to the rank of Squadron Leader.
- On August 15, 1947, he was also got the honour to lead the fly-past of over a hundred IAF aircraft over the Red Fort in Delhi.
- After independence, he was promoted to the rank of Group Captain in Ambala.
- Furthermore , he was promoted to the rank of Air Commodore and took over commanding officer of Western Air Command.
- He was also appointed as the Deputy Chief of the Air Staff and also became the Vice Chief of the Air Staff in 1963.
- He also commands the joint air training exercise “Shiksha” between IAF, RAF (Royal Air Force) and RAAF (Royal Australian Air Force).
Aircraft flew by him
- He has flown more than 60 different types of aircraft, Gnats, Vampires and also flown transport aircraft like Super Constellation.
- When Pakistan launched Operation Grand Slam in Akhnoor, Singh led IAF and fought with courage, determination and professional skill.
As the rank of CAS upgrades as a result Arjan Singh became the first Air Cheif Marshal of the IAF.
