In lieu of connecting youngsters to the true heroes life, we are going to discuss another hero Col./ Dhan Singh Thapa who was a warrior of Indo China war 1962.
He was born on 106th June 1928 in Shimla belonged t a Nepali family. He was commissioned on 28th August 1949, into 8th Gorkha Rifles.
“My father used to say every soldier who fights a war to defend his nation is a hero. In 1962, we lost the Indo-China war but it was a war against mighty odds. A soldier fights a war as his duty and his right, it is our duty to give him due recognition,” ….Poornima (Daughter of Lt Col Thapa).
DESCRIPTION OF HIS MISSION
At the time of war, the Indian Army was determined to capture SirJap Valley in Ladakh. 1/8th Gorkha Rifles were posted there which is lead by Major Thapa.
When China attacked with huge artillery firing, mortar bombardment. Major Thapa counter-attack and caused casualties for China. Due to attack continued for more than 2 hours communicated line shave been destroyed. After casualties and counter-attack, China once again began to attacked and they managed to push back the and cause casualties. But China was determined to capture, they continued the third-time attack on Indian troops this time the troops were hit by tanks. Major Thapa killed many soldiers with hand to hand combat courageously but due to massive Chinese army, they lost and overpowered by them.
At the time of receiving Param Vir Chakra his wife collected the award assuming he was dead but later got to know that he was alive and was prisoned and taken as a prisoner of war. He was tortured as the punishment for the heavy casualties to China. Later he was released and resumed his duty and promoted to Lt. Col. He got natural death after retirement.
LEGACY
- The Shipping Corporation of India honoured him by naming one of their ships as Major Dhan Singh Thapa PVC.
- Lt Col Thapa features in a book, ‘The Brave’, authored by Delhi-based Rachna Bisht Rawat who has chronicled the heroism of 21 men awarded the Param Vir Chakra
