The Union Cabinet on 08 July 2021 approved a package of Rs 23,123 crore for the purpose of strengthening the health infrastructure in the country to combat Covid. This information was given by the newly appointed Health and Family Welfare Minister Mansukh Mandaviya while addressing the reporters after the cabinet meeting.
After the extensive reshuffle and expansion in the Union Council of Ministers on July 07, this decision was taken in a meeting held under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 08, 2021. Health and Family Welfare Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said that this package will be implemented in the next nine months till March 2022.

Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said that the main objective of the package is to increase 2.44 lakh beds in community and primary health centers in all states, creation of pediatric care units in 736 districts across the country, additional 20,000 ICU beds.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said that this is the second phase of the emergency response and health system preparedness package.
