Union Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju inaugurated the first Khelo India Zanskar Winter Sports Festival at Padum in Zanskar in Kargil district on 21 January 2021.
This 13-day festival has been organized by the Ladakh Union Territory Administration to promote Zanskar as a winter tourist destination. The Union Sports Minister said that, due to heavy snow, Zanskar’s area was cut off from the rest of the world for 5-6 months, but no more!

One of the major important sports of Khelo India – Zanskar Winter Sports and Youth Festival, 2021 is a yak ride on ice.
The Union Sports Minister arrived at Skyserk-Pibbing from Yak at 30 degrees and at an altitude of 19000 feet to encourage and promote this winter festival globally.
The Minister urged the people to first adapt to this climate and stay fit so that they can feel the magnificent beauty of Zanskar and enjoy the Khelo India Winter Sports Festival.
He further said that, life is difficult due to the altitude with minus -20 degree Celsius during the day and freezing of -32 degree Celsius at night. Other main features of the winter sports festival include trekking on the frozen Zanskar River, ice climbing, ice hockey, ice sculpture and ethnic / local food festivals.
