Ranks And Insignia Of Indian Airforce: Just like any other Air Force in the world, the Indian Airforce has a hierarchy which is being followed consisting of three types of personnel’s i.e. Commissioned officers, Junior commissioned Officers, and Non-commissioned Officers. These posts contain different benefits and different Payscale. Commissioned officers hold the topmost position, thereafter the junior commissioned officer’s and last but not the least are non-commissioned officers or OR’s i.e. other ranks.

With each promotion the rank and insignia for the same changes. Here in this article we are going to provide you the details of ranks and insignia of Indian Air Force so as to make every Air Force candidate aware of their career growth if they wish to join Indian Air Force:

RANKS & INSIGNIA OF COMMISSIONED OFFICERS OF INDIAN AIR FORCE:

Pilot Officer is the lowest rank in the officer’s category of the Indian Air Force. After that, a flight cadet gets promoted to Flying Officer. Later than serving for a minimum of two years, the next post is of Flight Lieutenant. And then the next rank that comes is of a Squadron Leader and then of Wing Commander. Till wing commander, the promotion is automatic and only based on the good performance of the person. After Wing Commander the next rank is of Group Captain. For group captain it is mandatory that you’ve completed at least 16 years of service and only the best persons with Wing. Commander post will get promoted to Group Captain. The next all ranks mentioned above runs on the same criteria i.e. to choose the best among all.

IMPORTANCE OF 5 STARS IN COMMISSIONED RANKS:

The top ranks of the three Indian Defence forces i.e. in Indian Navy, Indian Air Force & Indian Army are 5 star ranks. It means a huge prestige to receive such a rank. Arjan Singh is the first and only officer of the Indian Air Force to be promoted to five-star rank as Marshal of the Indian Air Force. Those officers who hold a 5-star rank are considered to be serving officers till death and hold their rank for life.

RANKS & INSIGNIA OF JUNIOR COMMISSIONED OFFICERS OF INDIAN AIR FORCE

Junior Warrant Officer: Usually a technical leader or specialist holds the rank of Junior Warrant Officer.

Warrant Officer: It is the second-highest rank in the junior commissioned rank.

Master Warrant Officer: This is the rank in which an officer is designated by the warrant, unlike commissioned officers who get designated as an officer by a commission. It is the highest rank in junior commissioned officers.

 

RANKS & INSIGNIA OF NON-COMMISSIONED OFFICERS OF INDIAN AIR FORCE

 Aircraftman: It is the lowest of all ranks in the Indian Air Force.

Sergeant: This is the rank just below the Junior Warrant Officer.

Corporal: It is a rank that corresponds to commanding a section or squad of soldiers.

Leading Aircraftman: Technically it is not a rank but a title given to Non-Commissioned Officers in the Air Force.
