Human Development Index 2020 : India ranked at 131

According to a report released by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), India has been ranked 131 out of 189 countries in the 2020 Human Development Index (HDI). In this, India was ranked 129th last year, meaning that this year India has slipped two places.

Human Development Index (HDI) is a measure of health, education and standard of living in a nation. However, UNDP says that India’s slipping in the list does not necessarily mean that work is not being done there, but rather it means that other countries have done better.

The Human Development Index is a statistical index that incorporates life expectancy, education, and income indices. The Human Development Index measures the standard of living of a country. In this, the gross domestic product (GDP) of the country and the level of health and education available are also seen. The first human development index was released by the United Nations in the year 1990. Each year it is published by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

According to the Human Development Report 2020, the life expectancy of Indians born in 2019 was estimated at 69.7 years, while in Bangladesh it was 72.7 years. In terms of life expectancy, the neighbouring country of Pakistan remained behind. Life expectancy there was estimated at 67.3 years.

According to the report, Norway topped the Human Development Index, while Ireland, Switzerland, Hong Kong and Iceland ranked second, third, fourth and fifth respectively.

According to the Human Development Report, even small countries like Sri Lanka and Bhutan are better than India in the index. It is known that Sri Lanka is at 72nd and Bhutan is at 129th position. At the same time, India’s neighbors Sri Lanka and China are at 72nd and 85th position respectively.

In the Human Development Index, Bhutan (129), Bangladesh (133), Nepal (142), Myanmar (147), Pakistan (154) and Afghanistan (169) etc. were included in the category of medium human development. India ranked 130 in this list in the year 2018.

189 countries were included in the Human Development Index. India’s HDI price was 0.645. Due to this, India had to join the category of countries with moderate human development and slipped two points to reach 131st position.
