To increase its strength at sea, India will soon get three nuclear attack submarines. These three submarines will be 95 percent indigenous. After this, three more such submarines will be made. Indigenous submarine manufacturing capacity is going to increase drastically.
The Cabinet Committee on Security is considering a proposal of about Rs 50,000 crore for indigenous construction of three nuclear submarines. These submarines will be built by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) in Visakhapatnam. This project is different from the Arihant category project.
Under this project, six nuclear powered submarines are being built with the capability to launch ballistic missiles. The nuclear attack submarine project will add to the indigenous submarine capability as 95 per cent of it will be built in India. The project will give a major boost to the domestic defense sector, including both the private and public sectors.
This project will also be of great help to the economy as it is expected to generate a large number of jobs in the defense sector. This step of the Government of India will be a big boost for the submarine manufacturing capability within the country.
