Recently Indian women boxers Simranjit Kaur (60 kg) and Manish (57 kg) won gold medals at the Cologne Boxing World Cup in Germany. Manish defeated compatriot Sakshi 3–2 while Simranjit won the title by defeating Maya Kilihans of Germany 4–1.
India won three gold, two silver and four bronze medals in this competition and finished second in the overall table. India’s AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships bronze medalist Simranjit Kaur impressed in the semi-finals and took on Germany’s local boxer Maya Kleinhans in the title match.
With this, Indian boxers successfully ended their 67-day Europe training and competition campaign. For India, five women and eight men Indian boxers participated in the Cologne Boxing World Cup after strong preparation in Italy. Sports Minister Kiran Rijiju congratulated him on the success of Indian boxers.
Sonia Lather (57 kg), Pooja Rani (75 kg) Gaurav Solanki (57 kg) and Muhammad Hasmuddin (57 kg) won bronze medals in their respective weight categories.
In the men’s section, Amit Panghal (52 kg) won the gold medal on 19 December 2020. He got a walkover in the final. Veteran Satish Kumar (over 91kg) had to be content with the silver medal, as he could not hit the ring to play the final due to injury.
Apart from hosts Germany and India, boxers from Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, France, Moldova, Netherlands, Poland and Ukraine also participated in this competition. India has achieved tremendous progress in boxing.
