Our country have various stories of heroism but true heroism was about legends who sacrificed their own lives for the country. Major Ramaswamy Parameswaran was one of them . Let us know about him-
BIOGRAPHY
Major Ramaswamy Parameswaran, was born on 13 September 1946, in Bombay, Maharashtra. Mr K S Ramaswamy and Mrs Janaki were his parents and he got married to Mrs Uma who was a poet as well as a writer.
He completed his initial studies from SIES( South Indian Education Society) High School, Mumbai in 1963 and further graduated from SIES college in 1968 from Science stream and he was later joined OTA and was commissioned in 1972 .
MILITARY CAREER
• He was first commissioned into 15 Mahar of the famed Mahar Regiment of Indian Army and served there for eight years. He was later transferred to serve with 5 Mahar Battalion in 1983.
• During his service he took parts in various operations which led to boost his skills of leadership.
• He was affectionately called as “Parry Sahib by his men of his unit.
CITATION
The citation for the Param Vir Chakra awarded to him reads:
On 25 November 1987, when Major Ramaswamy Parameswaran was returning from search operation in Sri Lanka, late at night, his column was ambushed by a group of militants. With cool presence of mind, he encircled the militants from the rear and charged into them, taking them completely surprise. During the hand-to-hand combat, a militant shot him in the chest. Undaunted, Major Parameswaran snatched the rifle from the militant and shot him dead. Despite of being wounded he continued to give orders and inspired his command till he breathed his last. Five militants were killed and three rifles and two rocket launchers were recovered and the ambush was cleared.
Major Ramaswamy Parameswaran displayed the most conspicuous bravery and made the supreme sacrifice by laying down his life.
ABOUT OPERATION PAWAN
Operation Pawan was the code name assigned to the operation by the Indian Peace Keeping Force to take control of Jaffna from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, better known as the Tamil Tigers, in late 1987 to enforce the disarmament of the LTTE as a part of the Indo-Sri Lanka Accord.
OPERATION PAWAN : 25 NOV 1987
He and his unit were given the task to oversee the implementation of Indo-Sri Lanka.
On late night of 25 Nov 1987 Major was tasked to lead a team of soldiers for a search mission in Kantharodai near Uduvil in Jaffna, the stronghold of LTTE.
On the way of searching of consignment of weapons ,a group of militant attacked them. Major and his team of 30 soldiers faces heavy firing from all the directions. The militants used heavy artillery ljke AK-47s ,grenades explosive and mines etc. Major Parameswaran launched a counter ambush to save his soldiers. He dropped and crawled towards the direction of ambush to surround the militants.
During the hand-to-hand combat, a militant shot him in the chest. Undaunted, Major Parameswaran snatched the rifle from the militant and shot him dead. Despite of being wounded he continued to give orders and inspired his command till he breathed his last.
Maj Ramaswamy Parameswaran was given the nation’s highest gallantry award, “Param Vir Chakra” for his cold courage, indomitable fighting spirit and supreme sacrifice.
He became the sole recipient of PVC award from the IPKF operation in Sri Lanka and the first from OTA Chennai to get the coveted award.
LEGACY
The Housing project, “Parameshwaran Puram” in Chennai has been named after Major R Parameshwaran PVC in his honour.
It was because of Major R.Parameswaran that our neighbouring country Sri Lanka still trust us . We are the first whom they trust in their problems. Jai Hind
