In the Midnight of 2nd May 2020, a team of 5 Army personnel and a sub-inspector of J&K police started a counter-terror attack at the Handwara area of Jammu & Kashmir. The counter-terror attack started at 3.30 am after an intelligence report of terrorists inside a house with a few civilians as hostages. Col. Ashutosh Sharma took the charge of the operation and started the operation.
The counter-terror attack was conducted by Col. Ashutosh Sharma under the joint operation of the Indian Army and the J&K police. The joint team was able to eliminate the terrorist and save the lives of the civilians after 12 hours of operation. During the counter-attack when the team entered into the house to save the civilians they faced a massive firing from the terrorist and took the lives of Col. Ashutosh Sharma, Major Anuj Sood, two soldiers, and a sub-inspector of J&K police.

Col. Ashutosh Sharma was a part of 21 Rashtriya Rifles was a part of many counter-terror attacks earlier also. He was awarded the Sewa Medal (Gallantry Award) twice. He was an ex – NDA and was commissioned in the Indian Army in the year 1997. He always wants to join the Indian Army since childhood. After many attempts, he succeeded in joining the Indian Army
Col. Ashutosh Sharma and Major Anuj Sood were very close to each other and were likes brothers despite the difference of ranks in the force. Both the soldiers showed an act of valor and May the soul Rest in Peace.
