India-based scientist, Mrityunjay Mahapatra has been appointed Director General of India Meteorological Department (IMD) on 4th June. Maha Patra will succeeds the on role Director General Dr. KJ Ramesh. He will be the Chief of the Indian Meteorological Department from August 1, 2019, his tenure will be 5 years.
Mrityunjay Mahapatra – He is known for the cyclone warning specialist and people call him as Cyclone man for his cyclone forecasts. The recent warnings and revelations given during the recent Fani cyclone came true, after which he was praised. Due to information in time many people are rescued.
He prior worked with DRDO(Defence Reasearch and Development Organisation) before joing to IMD. In past many years he gave accurate forecasts on cyclones such as Phallian, Hudhud and Titli which hit the eastern coast.
He focuses on strengthing the Infrastructure of IMD . He wants to improve the weather related forecasting related to sector and giving impact based prediction . By sector- oriented forecasting IMD can predict for specific areas like transport , weather, etc. at this time IMD predict impact based for cyclone only.
