Indian Soldier Jaswant Singh
In the Indo-China War of 1962, the valor of the martyred Indian soldier Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat was shown who fought a huge Chinese army on the border alone for 72 hours.
This Mahavir warrior not only kept the Chinese soldiers at bay for 72 hours hungry and thirsty but also killed 300 enemy soldiers alone. Let us know about the amazing story of this brave man who saved the country from China.
Jaswant Singh Rawat was born on 19 August 1941 in Badayun in Pauri-Garhwal district of Uttarakhand. The patriotism in him was such that he went to join the army at the age of 17. But he was not taken due to young age. However, on 19 August 1960, Jaswant was inducted into the army as a rifleman.
On September 14, 1961, his training was completed. A year later, on November 17, 1962, the Chinese army attacked Arunachal Pradesh with the aim of capturing it.
During this period, a company of a battalion of the army was deployed for the safety of the Nuranang Bridge, including Jaswant Singh Rawat. As the Chinese army continued to dominate, the Indian Army withdrew the 4th Battalion of the Garhwal Unit. But Jaswant Singh, Lance Naik Triloki Singh Negi, and Gopal Gusai did not return. These three soldiers wanted to rescue the Chinese machine gun firing from a bunker.
All three soldiers hid in rocks and bushes and escaped heavy firing and went close to the Chinese army bunker and threw hand grenades from a distance of 15 yards and killed several soldiers of the enemy army and snatched the machine guns. This changed the direction of the whole battle and China’s dream of conquering Arunachal Pradesh could not be fulfilled.
However, Triloki and Gopal were martyred in this shootout. At the same time, Jaswant was surrounded by the enemy army and beheaded. After this, on 20 November 1962, China declared a ceasefire. According to the report, 300 Chinese soldiers were killed in these three days.
Jaswant’s soul still lives today
Locals and soldiers believe that the soul of Jaswant Singh Rawat is still protecting the eastern border of India. A large memorial named Jaswantgarh has been built in his name in Nooranang. Every item of martyrdom has been kept here.
For the sake of the country, the shoes of Jaswant, who have been martyred, are polished here daily and the clothes worn are pressed. Five Jawans of the Sikh Regiment have been deployed for this work. Not only this, the first plate of morning and night is served in front of Jaswant’s statue. It is said that in the morning when the sheets and other clothes are seen, there are wrinkles in them. At the same time, despite the polish, the shoes become discolored.
Jaswant Singh Rawat is the only soldier of the Indian Army who started getting promotions after his death. First Nayak, then he became Captain and Major General. During this time, his family members were also paid a full salary.
