How Girls Can Join Indian Air Force as a Commissioned Officer ?
In this Blog we will talk about How Girls Can Join Indian Air Force Opportunities are equal for girls in comparison to boys in all the three defence forces in India. Till now females were seen as officer levels in defence. And therefore Indian navy used to release many vacancies through INET, while IAF used to release vacancies through Indian AFCAT. The Commissioned Offered was a Short Service Commission SSC which was Valid only for 12 years and 2 year extendable, that means the SSC for women candidates is only for 14 years in total.Let us Discuss Each Entry in Detail:-
The entries for the girls are:
- AFCAT entry
Through Short Service Commission (SSC) Indian Air force conducts Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT) examination twice a year. Once forms are out in December and the examination will held in February and the second in July-August and the examination will be held in November.
Earlier, AFCAT exam used to be offline but now the mode of examination is online.
First you have to attempt written examination comprising of
- Maths 25 questions
- English 25 questions
- Gk 25 questions
- Military Aptitude & Reasoning 25 questions
Through AFCAT Indian Air Force offers three branches
Ø Flying Branch –
Ø Ground Duty (Technical) Branch
Ø Ground Duty (Non-Technical) Branch
Eligibility Criteria for
A.) Flying Branch
- Age: 20 to 24 years
- Height: 162.5 cms
- Nationality: India
- Marital status: Single
- Educational Qualifications: Minimum of 60% marks each in Maths & Physics at 10+2 & Graduation with minimum 60% marks or Equivalent or BE/ B. Tech
B.) Ground Duty (Technical SSC)
- Age: 20-26 years
- Nationality: Indian
- Marital Status: Candidates below the age of 25 years should be unmarried
- Educational Qualification: 10+2 and in Graduation with Maths & Physics. After completion of engineering degree or while in your final Year. Semester of engineering
- Marks: Must have scored a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent in any one of the listed disciplines.
C.) Ground Duty (Non-Technical SSC) Especially for the females Non-technical is one of the best posts offered by the IAF.
Eligibility Criteria
- Age 20 to 26 years for graduates (at the time of commencement of course).
- Marital Status: Candidates below the age of 25 year must be unmarried.
- Nationality: India
- Work: responsible for the efficient management of both human and material resources, some of the officers of the administration branch are selected and trained to carry out the following duties also:
- Air Traffic Controller- involves maintaining an orderly flow of traffic and airspace management
- Flight controller- involves close contact and supervision between the Air and Radar for effective Airspace management.
This Non-Technical Ground duty is having four departments:
Staff Category
- Administration :
- Accounts
- Logistics
- Education
- Administration & Logistics:
Graduate degree (min. three year degree course) in any discipline from a recognized university. With a minimum of 60% marks.
- Accounts
- com degree (minimum three year degree course) from a recognized university with a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent.
- Education
MBA/MCA OR MA/ MSC degree in English/Physics/Mathematics/Chemistry/Statistics/International Relations/international Studies/Defence Studies etc.
- Meteorology:
Post Graduate degree in any science stream/mathematics/ statistics/ geography/ computer applications/ environmental science/ applied physics/oceanography/meteorology/Agricultural meteorology.
Note: For Logistics upper age limit is upto 28 years.
Recently, first time in the history of Indian Air Force women joined IAF as Fighter Pilots. Three women joined IAF as fighter pilots.

Having NCC Air Wing ‘C’ Certificate
Eligibility
- Age: 20 to 24 years
- Height: 162.5 cms
- Marital status: single
- Educational Qualification: Minimum 60% marks in each in maths & Physics at 10+2 level.
- Graduate (Three year course) in any discipline from a recognized university with minimum 60% marks or equivalent.
- No written exam
