What Is Introspection

What Is Introspection ?

Introspection is an old method in scientific psychology which was introduced by Wilhelm Wundt in late 1980s. He proposed a formal way of introspection si he could study the structure of human mind. Often known as the father of psychology, Wundt tried to study cognitive processes. Simply saying, this means his interests were in our thought and thought process.

What is introspection, why is it important, and how do we become introspective? In this article, we’ll give you the detailed awareness and also the importance of introspection in leaders.

What Is Introspection?

Introspection is the examination or observation of one’s own mental and emotional processes. Through introspection, we can gain knowledge about our inner workings. Introspection is sort of like perception, but also unlike perception in that it doesn’t involve the five senses. We don’t see, hear, smell, touch, or taste to gain insights.
Generally, introspection involves looking inward to try to understand ourselves. It does not involve looking outward. Introspection is mental way of looking inward and this is distinguished from other forms of self-knowledge such as the physical experience of our body in space or felt knowledge of internal physical aches and pains. Remember, introspection can be used to better understand our attitudes, beliefs, desires, evaluations, intentions, emotions and sensory experiences.

What Is the Goal of Introspection?

When we are introspective, we can become aware of things we weren’t previously aware of. We might discover thoughts or feelings, or we might form beliefs or judgments based on the information we learn. All of this information can be useful for understanding ourselves and improving our well-being.

Self-Monitoring : Simplest Method of Introspection

it is a simple scanning process that involves simply noticing what’s going on in our minds. If this is true, it would require relatively little effort and would likely be aided by psychological tools like mindful meditation. Mindfulness is a technique that simply involves observing without judgment. Thoughts, emotions, and other information flow through your mind and you simply notice. You might also imagine these thoughts floating away like clouds in the sky. By quieting your mind, you give yourself the opportunity to observe, learn, and gain insights into your inner workings.

Strengthening your self- awareness as a leader

A leader needs introspection time for looking inward- to consider who they are, what they value, what motivates them. Introspection or examination of personal values, meaning and purposes creates clarity. It enable leaders to focus on long – term success, not simply fire – fighting. There is power in envisioning and planning for a future. A good leadership duty is the lifting of a person’s vision to higher sights and raising person’s performance to a higher standard. For leaders, pysical act of writing is a simple practice to strenthen introspection and self-awareness. There is a great power in writing. Not only does it bring clarity, the act of writing increases our ability to achieve. The act of writing stimulates the base of the brain, a group of cells called the Reticular Activating system (RAS). Writng triggers the RAS, which in turn sends a signal to the cerebral cortex. Once you write a goal, your brain will be working overtime to see you get it, and will alert you to the signs and signals that were there all along. We know that writing down our goal help in its attainment and it is proved through certain studies that you become 42 percent more likely to achieve your goals simply by writing them down.
