What Is Indian Coast Guard ?

What Is Indian Coast Guard : Indian Coast Guard is a multi-mission organization, conducting year-round real-life operations at sea. The Indian Coast Guard was established on 18 August 1978 in an independent form by the Coast Guard Act, 1978 of the Parliament of India. It works under the Ministry of Defence.

Indian Coast Guard (ICG) protects India’s maritime interests and enforces maritime law, with jurisdiction over India’s territorial waters boundaries including India’s territorial water boundaries and exclusive economic zones.

Indian Coast Guard works in close collaboration with the Indian Navy, Department of Fisheries, Department of Revenue (Customs) and Central and State Police Forces.

The organization is headed by the Director General Indian Coast Guard (DGICG), who exercises its overall command.

For effective command and control, India’s maritime zones are divided into five Coast Guard Zones, namely, North-West, West, East, North-East and Andaman and Nicobar, with respective regional headquarters at Gandhinagar, Mumbai, Chennai , Kolkata and Port Blair. The Coast Guard area is commanded by officers of the rank of Inspector General.

What Is Indian Coast Guards : The Coast Guard also has the responsibility of guarding and protecting the beaches. Continuing sea smuggling in the 1960s, non-detection of illegal movement in large quantities of fishing activities off the coast, especially when there is no effective method for registration of fishing craft/boats, etc.

Due to this, the country was suffering huge economic loss. Rustomjee Commission was formed for effective rules and action to prevent this loss.

And the same commission realized the need of the Coast Guard along with the Navy and recommended it. The recommendations of the Rustomji Committee were considered by the Secretaries and accepted on 7 January 1976.

Today, the Indian Coast Guard, along with the Navy, holds an important place in protecting the country’s coasts. Along with this, the Coast Guard also has a special role in dealing with the situation like floods in rivers.
