Written exam Twice in a year by UPSC focusing Maths, and General Ability
Followed by Interview at SSB |
At present there are three modes of recruitment to the Indian Police Service.
1. Through Civil Services Examination conducted by UPSC 2. Through Limited Competitive Examination conducted by UPSC 3. Through appointment of State Police Services officers by promotion. |
Training | |
NDA 3 years then IMA 1 year | All the officers of Indian Police Service undergo probationary training at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, Mussoorie and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy, Hyderabad. After successful completion of probation, officers are confirmed in the service. Also, there is provision for mandatory Mid Career Training for IPS officers spread across the entire service span. |
Appointments | |
Indian Army | IPS officers can be appointed in autonomous organizations/ sub-ordinate organizations/ PSUs/ UN Organizations/ International Organizations in various capacities. They can also serve as Personal Secretaries to Ministers in Central Government. A large number of senior posts in Central Armed Paramilitary Forces (viz, CRPF, CISF, BSF, SSB, ITBP, NSG), besides CBI, IB, RAW, etc are manned by IPS officers. |
Educational Qualification | |
12th Passed / Appearing in any stream | The candidate should be a graduate from any University recognised by the Government. Candidates who have appeared in the final year examination of their graduation and awaiting result can appear in Preliminary Examination for IAS/ UPSC Examination. |
Age limit | |
16.5 years to 19.5 years | 21 to 32 years (no of attempts for Gen. 4)
Students from the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities can give the exam as many times as they want between the age of 21 to 37 years. Students from Other Backward Classes can give the exam between the age of 21-35 years and 9 times. Persons with Benchmark Disabilties can give the exam 9 times between the age of 21 to 42 years. |
As a citizen an army officer being called to hold the parts of the civil services and the police and never the other way round. That’s enough proof as to who is really more capable. Our army, already engaged in activities not core to their functions, including rescuing kids from borewells, natural disasters like floods, landslide, cyclones etc. |
