According to Leonodios Kostrikis, Professor of Biological Sciences at the University of Cyprus, a strain of Kovid-19 combining Delta and Omicron was found in Cyprus.
The discovery has been named “deltacron” because of the identification of an omicron-like genetic symbol within the delta genome.
The team has identified 25 such cases. Sequences of 25 DeltaCron cases were sent to GISAID, the international database for tracking changes in the virus.
Out of 25, 11 were already hospitalized with Covid, while 14 were among the general public.COVID mostly relies on random mutations to develop new variants. This is when the virus makes a copy of itself and errors appear in the covid gene. In most cases, these changes are harmless. However, sometimes they can trigger benefits such as being more permeable or being better able to avoid vaccines.
