Air travelers to India can also use face scan as their boarding pass from the year 2022. The first airports to start this facility in India are Kolkata, Pune, Varanasi and Vijayawada. NEC Corporation Private Limited has been selected by the Airports Authority of India to implement this project.
The details of this face recognition data are to be stored in the Digi Yatra Central Ecosystem. To avail this service, the passenger has to send the PNR, PACS details and facial biometrics to the biometric boarding system of the departing airport through the mobile application. Each passenger can also choose to ‘not opt for service’.

The facial recognition is to be done using this software designed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
This project is to be implemented as a part of the Digi Travel Policy of the Government of India. This policy is being implemented by the Ministry of Civil Aviation. Under this, the ministry aims to provide biometric based digital processing of passengers at airports. It helps the passengers to walk through the security scanner faster. This removes redundancy and increases resource usage.
