What is IDSA :

Formerly stands for Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses – situated New Delhi, It is an Indian think tank for advanced research in international relations, especially strategic and security issues, providing training to civilian and military officers of the Indian government. It is financed by the Indian Ministry of Defence but operates as a non-partisan and autonomous body.

It aims to promote national and international security by carrying out research on defence and security-related issues and disseminating the knowledge among the policy-makers and wider public

About Manohar Parrikar:

Manohar Gopalkrishna Prabhu Parrikar was an Indian politician and leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party who served as Chief Minister of Goa from 14 March 2017 until his death on 17th March 2019. Previously, he was the Chief Minister of Goa from 2000 to 2005 and from 2012 to 2014 and from 2014 to 2017, he served as the Minister of Defence.

IDSA Renamed As Manohar Parikar Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses

‘The Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses’ (IDSA) has now renamed as Manohar Parikar Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses:  would be renamed as ‘Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses’ by the Central Government. The decision has been taken by the Central Government to honour the commitment and legacy of late Former CM of Goa Shri Manohar Parrikar.

Late Manohar Parrikar, an epitome of integrity and dedication in public life, throughout his career, showed a tremendous fighting spirit, taking on the odds with fearlessness. Late Manohar Parrikar was Defence Minister from November 9, 2014 –March 14, 2017 and steered the Ministry through the tough challenges of Pathankot attack and Uri attack and responded to these with exemplary boldness.

India witnessed a series of decisions that enhanced India’s security capacities, boosted indigenous defence production and bettered the lives of ex-servicemen during the time of late Manohar Parrikar. His biggest contribution was towards the implementation of long-standing One Rank One Pension (OROP) demand for the Indian Armed Forces.

Late Manohar Parrikar initiated major military reforms with the objective of having better teeth-to-tail ratio by setting up an expert committee under Lt Gen (Retd) DB Shekatkar for enhancing combat capability and rebalancing defence expenditure.
