“TIGERSHARKS ” 222 Squadron Gets Resurrected With Su-30 MKI Aircraft

To boost Indian  Ocean region our Defence Minister Rajnath Singh have inducted Su- 30 fighter Squadron at the Air force Station in Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu. It is the second fighter squadron in the South.  No. 222 squadron of Sukhoi – 30 MKI will strengthen the capability of IAF.

ABOUT 222 SQUADRON

  • The  222 squadrons have contributed to the Indian Air Force not only today but also before they firstly in 1969 Haryana then in 1971 Indi – Pakistan war.
  • In 1985 they were the first to be equipped with MiG- 27.
  • Recently  2018 in the exercise called Gagan Shakti capability of aircraft have been tested.
  • No. 222 Squadron will help in locating China’s action on the Indian Ocean region.
  • The squadron will have five to six planes, with the number expected to rise to 18 in the future, according to local media. The new aircraft are being equipped with Brahmos and supersonic cruise missiles,  which were jointly developed by India and Russia and have a range of 300km (186 miles).

FEATURES OF TIGER SHARKS FIGHTER SQUADRON

  • They are armed with 2.5 ton of Brahmos missile and equipped with air superiority fighter aircraft.
  •  300 km is the range of the missile
  • with the range of 330 km a missile can strike from large ranges which can be in sea, land, at any time (day or night ) and in any weather conditions.

  • Another objective is to change the paradigm of maritime surveillance, security, and strike in the region.
  • The presence of fighter squadron provides security to cover all the strategic and vital assets in the region.
