What is AFSPA “Armed Forces Special Powers Act” ?
What is AFSPA : Being a defence Aspirant each one of you should know about AFSPA.
In 1947 when India got freedom from foreign rule, India was divided into many small provinces and states (rajwade) the then home minister Shri Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel took the responsibility to unite all the small Provinces. For that constantly he tried to convince the rulers of the provinces and states and there were some clashes and small fights also.
After all there is a huge unrest in the north eastern states because some local peoples and leaders were all against India. They did not want to join India at all. Then on 22nd May, 1958 Government of India passed an GO, wherein the govt. gave special power named AFSPA To Indian Armed Forces because local police failed to function. The local administration failed to control the upsurge then the Army and Air Force was given special power for Assam, Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya AFSPA is applied in all these states.
State of Assam and in Union Territory of Manipur there is a constant insurgency to control this situation Army was called and given AFSPA.
According to AFSPA Indian Army
- Can shoot to kill anybody, including any local leader
- Can search the houses anytime if the army suspects that terrorist is hidden.
- Can demolish the house where suspects like terrorist are or were hidden.
- Can arrest anyone on grounds of suspicion.
AFSPA is currently applied in many of the districts of Assam, Manipur and J& K.Thanks to AFSPA Insurgency and Terrorist Activity was Controlled and Seven Sisters were and are on the Path of Development..
