Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that it is very important for military hardware to be customized and unique to take “surprise benefits” on India’s adversaries. And this goal can be achieved only when weapons and systems are developed in India itself. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the above things while giving his views on the topic “Atmanirbharta in the field of Defense – Call to Action” in a webinar organized by the Ministry of Defense on Friday.
“If 10 countries have the same type of defence equipment, then your armed forces will not have any uniqueness. For the element of uniqueness and surprise against the adversary, military equipment has to be developed in our own country.” The webinar was organized in the backdrop of the recent defence budget, which seeks to encourage the indigenization of defence equipment.
Prime Minister Modi said that in earlier times, due to competition among foreign companies, allegations of bribery were linked with imported defence equipment, there was controversy. This was often because foreign companies manufacturing defence equipment used to target their competitors’ products to defame them.
“It created confusion, suspicion and even opened doors for corruption. A lot of confusion was created on which weapon is good and which is not. Which is useful and which is not. Self-reliance in the field of production of defence equipment is also the solution to this problem. PM Modi said that India will very soon notify a new list of weapons and systems that cannot be imported to promote self-reliance in the defence sector.
