Lack Of Gorkha Soldiers : History of Gorkha Regiment is 200 years old and wherever this regiment goes, the stories of its bravery go ahead of it. And perhaps this is the only such regiment in the world which is waving its bravery in the army of not one, not two, but three countries. Most Gurkhas are part of the Indian Army.
After that, Gurkhas are included in Nepal and then in British army. In the army of British and Nepal, only Gurkhas of Nepal are recruited, while this regiment of the Indian Army includes both Nepalese Gurkhas and Indian Gurkhas, but a problem for the Indian Army is arising for the last two-three years. There is a dearth of Indian Gurkhas.
The Gurkhas of Nepal are easily available to the Indian Army, but the army is struggling with the shortage of Indian Gurkhas. According to an officer of the Indian Army, before independence, about 90 percent of Gorkha soldiers in the Gorkha regiment were from Nepal and 10 percent of Indian Gorkhas, but as time passed, this percentage was first 80:20 and later it was increased to 60:40. Given. That is, 60 percent Nepalese Domicile Gorkhas and 40 percent Indian Domicile Gorkhas.
In today’s date, Gurkha soldiers are getting complete from Nepal in the Indian Army. No reduction has been recorded in this, but the remaining 40 percent of Indian Domicile Gurkhas have come down drastically. If we talk about the figure of this shortage, then there are more than 43 battalions of seven regiments of Gorkha, in which there is a shortage of 4500 Indian Gorkhas i.e. as an estimate, about 80 to 100 Indian Gorkhas are getting reduced in every battalion. During recruitment, only 25 to 30 percent Gorkhas are available and to meet the remaining 10 to 15 percent, the Indian Army has recently started recruiting youth from Garhwal and Kumaon in this regiment.
The biggest reason for the shortage of Indian Gorkhas in the Indian Army is that Indian Gurkhas come for recruitment, but they are not meeting the criteria that have been fixed to join this regiment and the Indian Army has first It has been decided since then that there will be no change in the criteria set for recruitment. The Indian Army did change the policy, but not in the parameters.
Therefore, to meet this shortcoming, the youth of Kumaon and Garhwali have been given a chance while giving relaxation in the recruitment and this is the first time that other than Gorkha youths were included in the Gorkha regiment. In fact, youths from Kumaon and Garhwal of Uttarakhand are being recruited because they are very similar to Gorkhas. There is a lot of similarity between them, from lifestyle to food and geographical conditions.

Lack Of Gorkha Soldiers : According to an army officer, at present, more than 600 youths of Kumaon and Garhwal of Uttarakhand are taking training in Gorkha 4 Regimental Center, if we talk about this shortage, then another reason behind it is that now Indian Gorkhas who Earlier, we used to see the army as a better option for the job, with the change of time, many more job options were opened in front of them and their trend has shifted towards that.
At the time of independence, the total number of Gurkha regiments established by the British was 10, but after independence, when the army was divided, 4 regiments 2, 6, 7 and 10 were kept by the British, while 6 regiments 1, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 9 came to India. After independence, the Indian Army established another regiment of Gorkhas which is known as 11 Gorkha Regiment and one of the 4 regiments which went to British got disbanded. However, the Indian Army is hopeful that in the coming days, the shortage in the Gorkha regiment of Indian Gurkhas will be removed.
