Gen. Manoj Mukund Naravane – the New Chief of Army staff

Gen Manoj Mukund Naravane has taken over the charge as new Army chief today i.e. on Tuesday, 31st December 2019. Before taking charge as chief of Army Staff he was honoured as the vice-chief of the Army in September. He was heading the Eastern command of the Army, and was responsible for the security of India-China border of about 4000 kms.

Gen Manoj Mukund Naravane took over the latter chief of Army i.e. General Bipin Rowat who has started his oath to be the COAS on 31st December 2016 and has completed his terms of service on 31st December 2019.

ABOUT GEN. MANOJ MUKUND NARAVANE

Born in April 1960 Gen. Naravane was commissioned into 7th battalion The Sikh Light Infantry in June 1980 and is the 27th COAS of Indian Army. He has served as the 40th Vice Chief of Army Staff (VCOAS) of the Indian Army, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) Eastern Command and General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Army Training Command.

General Naravane is the 3rd officer from the Sikh Light Infantry to become Chief of the Army Staff of the Indian Army, the other officers from this regiment were the 19th COAS General Ved Prakash Malik and the 25th COAS General Bikram Singh.

He was also part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force in Sri Lanka and also serves as India’s defence attaché at the Indian Embassy in Myanmar for three years.

HONOURS AND AWARDS

During his career, he has been awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (2019). Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (2017), Sena Medal, Vishist Seva Medal (2015).  Also awarded the CoAS commendation card for his service. He is also the Colonel of the Regiment of the Sikh Light Infantry. He took over this honour from previous colonel of the Regiment Lt Gen Devraj Anbu post his retirement.

ABOUT CHIEF OF ARMY STAFF

The Chief of the Army Staff is the professional head, commander.  He is the highest-ranking military officer of the Indian Army. The position is abbreviated as COAS in Indian Army, and is always held rank General. The COAS reaches superannuation upon three years in the office or at the age of 62, whichever is earlier.
