The IAF offers possibilities to applicants who have completed their 10th, 12th, graduation, and postgraduate studies. Other unique entrance systems include NCC entry and the University Entry Scheme (UES). In this blog, we are going to discuss different ways to join air force as officers and server the motherland with utmost pride.
To begin, let us look at the various components of the Indian Air Force.
Branches of the IAF:
The IAF has the following branches. These are:
Flying Branch: Pilots make up the Flying Branch. Pilots can be both males and females. Those in this section are the ones who fly the jets during missions and combat. Pilots are classified into three types: Fighter pilots, helicopter pilots, and transport pilots.
Ground Duty Branch:
The Ground Duty Branch is in charge of the control tower and meteorological activities. Officers are supposed to cooperate with pilots and keep them up to date on weather conditions. Ground Duty Branch is divided into two branches. They are as follows:
Ground Duty (Technical Branch): The Technical Branch is in charge of aircraft as well as other air force systems.
Ground Duty (Non-Technical Branch): Logistics, Accounts, Teaching, Management, and Medical & Dental Branch are all part of the Non-Technical Branch.
Ways to Join Indian Air Force:
Now let’s move on to the main topic that is the ways to join Indian Air Force as officers. An aspirant can join the air force after completing different educational qualifications. The IAF hires civilians for a variety of positions such as Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS), Stenographer, Content Associate (Material Associate), Lower Division Clerk (LDC), Watchman, Chef, Carpenter, Courier, Gardener, Fitter, Merchant, Barber, Tin and Copper Smith, Mechanic, Weaver, Painter, and so on.
To be considered for these positions, candidates must have completed the 10th grade or have a diploma in the relevant discipline. Some positions demand only a 10th grade education, while others require an ITI. It should also be emphasised that candidates who have completed their 12th grade are given precedence.
Candidates can join the IAF after completing their 12th grade as well. All males who have cleared the class 12th exam are eligible to enter the National Defence Academy (NDA) by passing the written test and the SSB interview. Applicants join the IAF after completing their training. Notably, the UPSC administers the NDA test twice a year.
Similarly, Graduates can also join any branch of the IAF by clearing the UPSC’s twice-yearly Combined Defence Services (CDS) test. Aspirants may also take the Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT) in order to be chosen for the IAF. Following selection, applicants get instruction at one of the IAF training centers before being called and assigned as Officers. Aspirants can also join the technological or ground duty divisions after finishing their post-graduate studies. If individuals have a degree in Aeronautical Engineering or Electronics, it is easier to join the IAF.
It is also important to remember that Admittance into the Meteorological Branch is only feasible after completing a post-graduate degree in any Science stream like Mathematics, Statistics, Geography, Computer Applications, Environmental Science, Applied Physics, Oceanography, Meteorology, Agricultural Meteorology, Ecology & Environment, Geo-physics or Environmental Biology with a minimum of 50% in all papers combined. Notably, students must have Maths and Physics as the subjects at Graduation Level, with minimum 55 percent marks in both.
Furthermore, The National Cadet Corps (NCC), often referred as the Fourth Line of Defense, allows young people to join the IAF. Candidates are able to join the IAF if they have accomplished NCC training and acquired a ‘C’ Certification from the Air Wing NCC.
Apart from these, one can join air force through University Entry Scheme or UES Entry. The University Entry Scheme (UES) is for applicants who are in their pre-final year of a BE/B.Tech program. It must be guaranteed that there is no backlog in any paper from prior semesters at the date of the SSB interview. Candidates must score a minimum of 60% in all papers in order to complete the degree.
It is now obvious that applicants can join the IAF at any moment, from 10th grade through post-graduation. Because age plays a factor in entering the IAF, candidates must be aware of the age restriction before applying.
