Is LASER Surgery Allowed In Defence Forces ?

For every first time defence aspirant, regular defence aspirant or even someone wishing to make a career in defence stream has one core query related to medical standards with respect to selection in Defence Forces. The question of which every defence aspirant must know the answer is Is LASER Surgery Allowed In Defence Forces ?

In 2015, PIB (Press Information Bureau) published a Press Release via Ministry Of Defence on the subject – Is LASER Surgery Allowed In Defence Forces ? which covers the portion of Laser Technology being allowed or not.

All candidates whose vision defects have been medically treated using Laser Assisted in situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) and / or Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) eye surgery are not disqualified from recruitment into various branches of the Armed Forces including engineering, medical services. However, owing to requirement of physical fitness for military service such candidates are selectively accepted in the Armed Forces, the details of which are as under:-

(A) Candidates beyond the age of 20 years with LASIK and / or PRK surgery can seek commission in the Army on fulfilling the following conditions:-

(i) Uncomplicated stable LASIK / PRK done for Myopia or Hypermetropia with stable refraction for a period of six months after the procedure.

(ii) A healthy retina.

(iii) Corrected vision should be 6/6 in better eye and 6/9 in worse eye, with maximum residual refraction of + 1.50 in any meridian for myopia or hypemetropia.

(B) The LASIK and / or PRK can be permitted in Armed Force Medical College (AFMC), Pune at entry level for candidates above the age of 20 years. Candidates with LASIK / PRK at entry level are not permitted in National Defence Academy (NDA), Navy and Air Force as well as at entry level of Other Rank (OR) and Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs).

In Army, the candidates who have undergone LASIK / PRK will not be considered for aircrew duties.

INDIAN ARMY

Candidates who have undergone LASER Surgery for correction of refractive error will be considered for commission in Army if they fulfill following criteria :-

  • Age more than 20 years.
  • Uncomplicated stable LASIK/Excimer (PRK) laser procedure done for Myopia or Hypermetropia, with stable refraction for a period of six months after the procedure.
  • A healthy retina.
  • Corrected vision should be 6/6 in better eye and 6/9 in worse eye, with maximum residual refraction of + 1.50 in any meridian for myopia or hypermetropia.
  • Axial length within permissible limits.


INDIAN AIR FORCE

  • LASIK Surgery for correction of vision is admissible in Transport and Helicopter streams of Short Service Commission (Flying Branch) If the following condition are fulfilled at the time of Air Force medical examination.
  • LASIK Surgery should not have been carried out before the age of 20 years.
  • The axial length of the eye should not be more than 25.5 mm as measured by IOL master.
  • At least twelve months should have lapsed post uncomplicated stable LASIK. No history or evidence of any complication.
  • The post LASIK corneal thickness as measured by a corneal pachymeter should not be less than 450 microns.
  • Individuals with high refractive errors (>6D) prior to LASIK are to be excluded.
  • Candidates must not suffer from colour or night blindness.

    INDIAN NAVY

  • Indian Navy allows only one Laser eye correction.
  • The Navy allows for both LASIK and PRK laser eye surgery, both for current pilots and NFOs and for pilot/NFO applicants.
  • You can apply for the technical branches, onboard duty staffs etc.
  • Indian Navy accepts a stricter of only -0.75D. but if you are having  Color blindness or Night blindness individuals are disqualified.
  • And for the fighter pilots of Indian Navy uncorrected vision can be no worse than 20/40 (correctable to 20/20) in each eye.
  • But you can join as a transport pilot. if your vision is 6/6 after the glasses or without glasses.
