History Of Jat Regiment – Indian Army

History Of Jat Regiment : The ‘Jat Regiment’ is an infantry regiment of the Indian Army. It is the oldest and highest gallantry award winning regiment of the Army. The regiment has received 19 gallantry honors including eight Maha Vir Chakras, eight Kirti Chakras, 32 Shaurya Chakras, 39 Vir Chakras and 170 Sena Medals since independence between 1839-1947. In its time frame of over 200 years, the regiment has participated in several wars in India and abroad, including the First and Second World Wars.

The regiment is believed to have been started in 1795 by the ‘Calcutta Native Military’, which later became an infantry battalion of the Bengal Army. On the other hand, the British, who came into conflict with the Jats in search of power and dominance in India, noticed that after the Sikhs, the Jats harassed them the most.

He was so impressed by the qualities and stamina of the Jats soldier that he started recruiting him in the Bengal army. The first battalion of the 22nd ‘Bengal Native Infantry’ was formed in 1803. The 2nd and 3rd battalions were formed in 1817 and 1823. In January 1922, the 9th Jat Regiment of the Indian Army was formed.

Fighting together is the hallmark of ‘Jat Regiment’. That is why ‘Organization and Valor’ is the motto of this regiment. When this regiment enters the battlefield, it raises the slogan ‘Jat Balwan, Jai Bhagwan’. The logo of the regiment is the number nine in Roman, which represents the ninth battalion of the regiment, ‘Satyamev Jayate’ is inscribed on the top side of this number.

At present the regiment has 23 battalions. Each battalion consists of eight and a half hundred soldiers. The regiment is mainly recruited from the Hindu Jat community of western Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and Delhi. That is, there are about 96 percent Jats in the regiment and in one battalion, Ahirs, Gurjars and Rajputs have all been included. The headquarters of the regiment is in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh.

All the three battalions displayed indomitable courage during the First World War and won several honors including the Victoria Cross and two George Crosses and won several major gallantry awards. Between 1839 and 1947, this regiment had received 41 battle honors. This regiment is the only regiment to have received the title of Royal. The Jat Regiment is the highest honor and award receiving regiment in the Army.

Retired Major General Faizal Mukeem Khan of the Pakistan Army in his book ‘Pakistan Crisis in Command’ wrote about the ‘Jat Regiment’, “…we attacked the Indian Army with our entire infantry brigade on December 3, 1971 at Hussainiwala’s We attacked nearby and within moments we uprooted the legs of the Indian Army. Most of their important security posts were now under our control. Soon our army reached near Kausar-e-Hind Post. There, a small contingent of the Jat Regiment of the Indian Army was stationed in the security of that post.

History Of Jat Regiment : A small number of Jat Regimental detachments formed an iron wall and attacked the Pakistani army like hungry lions and faster than falcons. All these soldiers of the Indian Army were Jats. In this face-to-face battle, the Jat soldiers of the Jat regiment fought with such valor and zeal that all our ambitions, desires, all our hopes were dashed, all our hopes were dashed and we lost that battle.

The Jat Regiment in independent India has also brought glory to the Regiment in Sri Lanka and Siachen, including in the 1947–48 Jammu and Kashmir, the 1962 China War, and conflicts with Pakistan in 1965 and 1971. The 9th Jat Regiment was a war-renowned fighting unit of the elite class. This unit raised its valor in many wars including the World War. Several books have been written on the 9th Jat Regiment including books like ‘War Services of the Ninth Jat Regiment’. Captain Anuj Nayyar received the Maha Vir Chakra for his indomitable courage during the 1999 Kargil conflict. He was an officer of the 17th Battalion Jat Regiment.
