What Is Judge Advocate General ?

The Judge Advocate General’s (JAG) Department is the legal branch of the Indian Army. It deals with military related disciplinary cases and litigation and assists in providing legal assistance to the army in human rights matters and the rule of law among other things.

In India, the post of JAGF (Judge Advocate General) is entitled as a head of Judge Advocate General’s Department. It is held by a major general who is the legal and judicial chief of the Army. The Judge Advocate General is assisted by a separate JAG branch which consists of legally qualified army officers.

A Judge Advocate General of the Indian army advises the military personnel on their day to day matters including the Chief of the Army Staff. His department officers can either be commissioned directly into the JAG Branch or can be sidestepped from other branches, arms or corps.

JAG officers provide legal help to the military in all aspects, in particular advising the presiding officers of courts-martial on military law. JAG officers conduct all legal procedures from framing drafts to appearing at courts and military tribunals.

Indian Army JAG Eligibility Criteria

Educational Qualification

Overall LLB with minimum 55% marks (3 years professional after graduation or 5 years after 10 + 2 examination). The candidate should be qualified to be registered as an advocate in Bar Council of India / State. The applicant must have completed their LLB and hold a provisional or final degree.

Indian Army JAG 2021 Age Limit

21 to 27 years

Physical Standards

  • The Minimum height Required is 157 cm
  • The minimum weight required is 60 kg.
  • The chest must be 80 cm without expansion and it should be at least 85 with expansion.
  • 14 dental Points are essentially required.
  • Your body should not carry any genetic disease like joint knees, colour blindness or night blindness.
  • Your elbow should not be turned in outer direction for more than 15 degrees.
  • Your joint and your bones should be completely fine.
  • Any severe body fracture in any body part can cause permanent rejection.

Visual Standard

Eyesight Required:

  • Your eyesight must be 6/6 without glasses.
  • If you are wearing glasses it should not be worse than 6/12.
  • Limits for myopia 0.75D and for Hypermetropia +1.5D
  • Binocular vision III
  • Limits for colour perception I
  • Should not have colour blindness or night blindness.

JAG Selection Process 

Shortlisting of Applications. Integrated HQ of MoD (Army) reserves the right for shortlisting of applications, without assigning any reason. After shortlisting of applications, the Centre allotment will be intimated to candidates via their email approx. 2-3 weeks after the last day of application.

After allotment of Selection Centre, candidates will have to log in to the website and select their SSB dates which are available on a first-come-first-serve basis, up to a specified date, as notified on the website.

Candidates will be put through a two-stage selection procedure. Those who clear Stage I will go to Stage II. Those who fail on stage I will be returned on the same day. Duration of SSB interviews is five days.

Candidates recommended by the SSB and declared medically fit, will be issued a joining letter for training in the order of merit, depending on the number of vacancies available, subject to meeting all eligibility criteria.

Training of JAG Officer 

Army and Navy training would be held in Chennai and Kerala, respectively, with additional positions filled on a merit basis:

The training period is 49 weeks long. Only after completing the training period will a trainee be formally assigned to the position of Lt. JAG

A candidate is not permitted to marry during their training time, and if they do, they will be dismissed.

The University of Madras will issue a “Post Graduate Diploma in Defence Management and Strategic Studies” to all candidates who complete Pre-Commission training at Officers Training Academy, Chennai.

JAG Officer Salary 

The Candidates, who are selected for JAG Entry, would be offered a fixed salary of 15000 per month. The salary is initiated with the assistance of the management Panel. The selected candidates of the JAG Indian Army would also get allowances, benefits, incentives as per the norms of the rule of the organization.
