A new variant of Akash missile was successfully test-fired from Chandipur in Odisha on Monday. Officials said the missile, named ‘AKASH PRIME’, in its maiden test flight, accurately hit an unmanned aerial target mimicking an enemy aircraft. This test was done at 4.30 pm. An official said, “Akash Prime is equipped with indigenous RF detection technology for accuracy as compared to the current Akash system.
Due to other improvements, it can perform reliably in low temperature environment at high altitude. Its radar, EOTS, telemetry station, missile trajectory and flight parameters have also been improved.
Akash Prime Missile has been developed by DRDO’s Hyderabad-based laboratory in collaboration with other branches of the research organisation. The ITR used several surveillance systems, such as electro-optical tracking systems, radars and telemetry, to record the flight data of the missile.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has congratulated Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), Indian Army, Indian Air Force and other stakeholders for the successful test-fire of ‘Akash Prime’. He said that the successful test proves that DRDO is capable of developing world class missile systems. DRDO Chairman G. Satheesh Reddy also congratulated the team that tested the missile. He said that the ‘Akash Prime’ system will further boost the morale of the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force.
