Army Service Corps (ASC) hockey team returns to Jalandhar

The Indian Army’s Army Service Corps (ASC) hockey team has returned to the city of sports, Jalandhar after 21 years. A local army spokesman said on Wednesday that 21 years ago the players of the army’s ASC hockey team were sent to their respective places of deployment. Players used to gather from there to take part in camps in Bangalore.

Now once again, the Indian Army has sent all the hockey players of the Army Service Corps to a center in Jalandhar Cantt. A welcome ceremony was held when the army hockey team reached Jalandhar. Olympian Brigadier Harcharan Singh and Col Balbir Singh welcomed the team. He said that with the return of the Army Service Corps hockey team to the city, the legacy of the old glory of the ASC Corps team would be revived.

The spokesperson said that the Indian Army team had a golden period from 1975 to 2001. It achieved a good position in the sports world by winning tournaments like Army Hockey Cup, Guru Tegh Bahadur Gold Cup, Bombay Gold Cup, Beaton Cup, Aga Khan Tournament, Obidulla Gold Cup and Surjit Singh Gold Cup. The ASC Hockey team has been the nursery of excellent Olympians like Brigadier Harcharan Singh, VSM, Col Balbir Singh, VSM, Captain Romeo James, Hav Manuel Frederick and Hav SV Sunil. All these have raised the honor of India.
