Portugal’s MP Duarte Pacheco has been elected the new President of the IPU – Inter Parliamentary Union for the year 2020-2023.
The Speaker of the Lok Sabha of the Indian Parliament, Om Birla, has conveyed his best wishes to Duarte Pacheco on being elected as the President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and stated that in the ideals of democracy, consensus building, rule of law, and multilateralism Their confidence will help build a more focused and robust IPU over time.
The election process for the selection of the IPU president was through remote electronic secret voting, with a 24-hour time limit (window) for casting votes. During this election, Lawrence Fehlmann Rylee from Switzerland and Beatriz Argaman from Uruguay have also been unanimously elected to the Executive Committee of the IPU.
The President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) is the political head of this organization and directs all the activities of the organization and presides over all its meetings as well as being involved in the global events and functions as the representative of the IPU.
The IPU President is elected only for 3 years by the Governing Council of the IPU, which is an administrative body deciding the organization.
