Ways To Join Indian Air Force As An Officer

The Indian Air Force is the dream organization of many armed forces aspirants. The IAF provides many opportunities to the candidates in order to induct maximum talent and requisite personalities in the organization. The opportunities provided by IAF start just after a candidate passes his 12th class and ends up to the age of 26 years. These opportunities have different eligibility condition and different age range to segregate the applicants..

An aspirants who dreams to join Indian Air Force as an officer, gets 4 gateways. Namely,

  • NDA Entry
  • CDS Examination Entry
  • AFCAT Entry
  • NCC Special Entry

Let’s know in brief.

NDA Entry: NDA is a written exam conducted by UPSC twice in an year and after clearing this you will be called for Air force Selection board. After getting recommended by AFSB, Computerized Pilot Selection System Test also known as CPSS test will be taken to select the best candidates for Indian air force flying branch. After this the medical examination will take place. After you get selected for NDA you will be getting bachelor degree for three years from JNU, after that 1 year training at Air force academy, and then after you will be posted air bases as per your stream as flying officer.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Age: 16.5- 19.5 years
  • Gender: Only male candidates are eligible to apply.
  • Marital Status: only unmarried candidates are eligible to fill the application form.
  • Nationality: Candidates must be either,
  1. Citizen of India, or
  2. A subject of Bhutan, or
  3. A subject of Nepal, or
  4. A Tibetan refugee
  • Educational Qualification: 10+2 = PCM

CDS Examination Entry: CDS Examination is a gateway for both male and female candidates who desire to join Indian Armed Forces. Only unmarried graduates of age 19–24 are eligible to sit for the exam. Those Candidates qualified in the written exam. Then they are shortlisted for an interview by a Services Selection Board (SSB) Interview. Apart from SSB interview, Air Force academy candidates (only those who have applied for flying branch) are tested for PABT. After these tests, candidates undergo medical examination before finally admitted into the above-mentioned academies, and after successful completion of training, they are inducted into the armed forces.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Age Limit: 19- 25 years.
  • Gender: Male.
  • Qualification: with Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level. And Graduation BE / B Tech (Four Year Course).

AFCAT Entry: A Short Service Commission means a limited period career in the Air Force. One can join the IAF as a Short Service Commission Officer by opting for a SSC Course through AFCAT. This is the biggest test conducted for inducting officer in IAF. This test inducts both men and women as officers in all the three branches of IAF, i.e. Flying, Technical and Ground Duty. AFCAT is conducted twice every year by the Air Force and includes an added test called EKT (Engineering Knowledge Test) for Technical branch aspirants.

NCC Special Entry: Indian Air Force gives a golden opportunity to the young graduates with NCC ‘c’ Certificate holder either with ‘A’ or ‘B’ grade to join Indian Air Force as an Officer. Candidates with an Air Wing Senior Division ‘C’ certificate can join the Air Force (Flying Branch) through the Directorate General National Cadet Corps or through your respective NCC Air Squadrons. Only men are allowed to join the IAF as Pilots through the NCC
